Abstract

University outreach has become one of the core functions of higher education in Mexico, by integrating teaching, research, and extension with the demands of society, industry, and government. In this context, social service is consolidated as a mechanism of reciprocity between universities and society, with potential to generate social, formative, and institutional impacts. This article provides a qualitative and documentary analysis of the experience of the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosí in institutionalizing its social service program, examining its relevance, scope, and limitations. The discussion addresses challenges related to innovation, monitoring results, and adapting to local and global needs. Findings highlight the need to strengthen qualitative indicators, digitalization strategies, and collaborative governance frameworks to ensure the social significance of this program in both professional training and regional development.
